The Independent Designer Runway Show has kicked off Fashion Week at The Bellevue Collection for the past six years. The show is focused on developing local fashion talent from student designers to more established creatives. From April to September each year, a selected group of designers are tasked with developing a new runway collection with the guidance of mentors, including FGI Seattle’s Regional Director, Marj Turner; designer and stylist, Lisa Vian Hunter; image consultant, Bruce Pflaumer and GRAY Magazine Editor, Jennifer McCullum.
This year’s collections included Jersey Virago by Meagan Kruz, Poppyseed by Rebekah Adams, Stone Crow Designs by Jennifer Charkow, LOURDES é EVA by Nora Suárez, Paloma Hurtado by Paloma Hurtado, Gustavo Apiti Couture by Gustave Apiti and Chany Venturini by Maria Venturini. 2016 IDRS Winner, Devonation by Devon Yan, even made a return to the runway to close out the show. If you follow any of these designers on social media, you’ve seen the amount of work that was put into each collection and it was so amazing to see them finally come to life with the help of show producer (and FGI member) Terri Morgan and the models from TCM Models & Talent.
In addition to seeing some fabulous runway looks, the packed crowd also had the chance to vote for the Fan Favorite, Chany Venturini by Maria Venturini (recent graduate of The Art Institute of Seattle), who took home $1,000. When it came time to announce the 2017 IDRS winner, everyone was on the edge of their seats as the award went to Poppyseed by Rebekah Adams, who won a $5,000 cash prize and a featured segment on Seattle Refined. The remaining designers didn’t go home empty-handed though. Each designer was awarded a free year of FGI membership by The Bellevue Collection and The Kemper Freeman Family.
Welp, today was a first! I hung out at the @komo4 station and filmed a segment with @seattlerefined about my winning collection for @bellevuecollection . Wait. Whaaat? How did we get here?! Really though, I was super nervous until I was asked about my work, and then…totally calm. Oh Poppyseed? Yeah, I can talk about that! Anyway. Kudos to everyone in that industry! Cannot imagine having to do that all the time! 👊🏼 . After I got home I gathered baby dude and we trekked over to a restaurant to “watch mama on tv!”. Hey guys, guess what? Toddlers do NOT care if you are on tv. Long story short, I got super annoyed and was begging little man to just behave so I could bask in my own glory. Guess what? Toddlers don’t care. My pride took a hit today. I realized my kid doesn’t care if I’m on tv right now, he cares if I sit down and show him how to draw airplanes. He cares if I read the duck book over and over, if I chase him down the hall tickling him. . I am super proud of where the work I have done, and where it has taken me but I am so grateful for my spirited (polite way of saying cray) baby dude to remind me to stay grounded. . P.S I hope some of you saw the live story I did of us trying to watch the segment. HA! It was glorious. 👶🏼🤦🏼♀️ #PoppyseedClothing
Everyone at FGI Seattle is so proud of Rebekah and will definitely continue to watch her flourish as a designer. If you’d like to find out what inspired her winning collection, be sure to check out her Member Spotlight. If you’re interested in applying for the 2018 Independent Designer Runway Show, make sure to follow The Bellevue Collection on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for updates. Applications are usually accepted until early April of each year. We’re looking forward to seeing what next year’s designers can bring to the runway.
